The King of Korean Pop returns to Singapore for <THE SQUALL> world tour on the 30th December 2016.
Rain, who has been actively acting in dramas since his discharge from the army, connected back with music through his world tour. The last time we heard from him in Singapore was at MCM’s grand opening at Marina Bay Sands – his first public appearance after his discharge. He remembers Singapore as a place with an abundance of delicious food and shared that he was excited to see everyone again.
In fact, Rain will be gifting us with a brand new album in just two weeks to kick off 2017 on the right note. Did Singaporean fans get a sneak peek of his new album at the concert? It was sadly not to be, as Rain mentioned himself, albeit seriously, that he would love to.
However, fans have plenty to look forward to as our world-famous Gangnam Style oppa, PSY, joined the album production as a producer. One may remember Psy’s songs to be slightly eccentric and funky, but this time around, he is producing an album that focuses more on R&B for Rain. Given the smashing success Psy has achieved worldwide, we can’t help but wonder if this new album – combining the best of Psy and Rain – would be an equally big hit across Asia, and even the world.
Sharing some exciting future plans, Rain will be in a new movie that will released in 2017, and had recently concluded filming for a drama, starring alongside f(x)’s Victoria, whom he enjoyed working with.
As he ventures into overseas productions, would it be possible that we would one day see Rain filming at our void decks? Well, we could all hope as Rain himself said he wouldn’t mind participating in local productions if the opportunity arises.
As the CEO of his own company, he has plans to debut his own boy group this year, if not latest by 2018 – and we can’t wait to see a boy group exuding the charms and talents of Rain in a multiplier effect!
Rain Tour in Singapore 2016 – The Squall
Despite a one-hour delay, <THE SQUALL> started off with a bang, making clever use of the opening videos to usher in the theme of the squall and eventually, Rain. The concert showcased his top-tiered performances with his honey vocals in ballads, and dance breaks that were interweaved throughout his set.
Rain took the audience through a roller coaster of emotions as the songs varied from electro pop that eventually eased nicely into soulful R&Bs – hyping the crowd right off the start with songs such as It’s Raining, I’m Coming and Hip Song before moving to slower songs such as Love Story and Handshake. However, there is never a dull moment with Rain as he got off the stage and approached the fans with handshakes, fitting aptly for the song.
The whole concert was also peppered with many moments of fan service, notably with his most loyal fans who had managed to snagged front row tickets. He showed off his rapping and beatbox skills to screams and shouts while consistently teasing fans with provocative moves and revealing of his abs – which sadly did not happen.
Treating his fans, he also threw towels into the crowd, which kept fans on their toes as one can never predict what will happen next. Bringing the crowd to its feet in the second half with songs such as With U, Fresh Woman, You and La Song, he momentarily turned the hall into a club with a string of funky pop songs.
Not forgetting to thank his fans, a photo collection of his fans from all over the world was screened as he sang I Love You, effectively conveying his feelings to the adoring crowd beneath his feet. As the crowd swelled forward for a better view towards the end of the show, he stopped security from stopping fans and sweetly said “it is okay”, prompting more to join the crowd. Fans were rewarded with eye contact and one lucky fan even had her phone taken onstage for a selfie.
A squall is a sudden, violent gust of rain and wind – and indeed, living up to the title of the tour, Rain came and went all in one night, wrapping up THE SQUALL with Singapore as its last stop.
