Being one of the newer groups in the K-pop roster, A-Jax to some extent have their work cut out for them. However, how did they do for their showcase in Singapore?
The first thing that did strike me when I first saw them on stage was how in real life, their faces seemed a fair bit smaller, as well as how well their complexion seemed to hold up even under the stage lights. Also, when they first appeared on stage, they did take a while to get comfortable, starting out with a few calls for the fans to cheer on them, and then a few shy smiles for the fans’ cameras.

After that, they did move on to the first two songs, which were their high tempo efforts, a relatively recent single “Hot Game” and their debut “One For You”. Putting aside the overtly loud sound system, some aspects of their performance was rather commendable, such as lead singer Yun-yeong’s vocal ability.
Seven Questions:
After the rather energetic opener, after which some of the guys were seen panting. They then moved on to a question and answer session. While some of the answers seemed rather formulaic, such as Chili Crab being the de facto Singaporean food, as well as a display of the ever-popular Gwiyomi, there was some interesting banter in between.
One interesting reply was to their ideal types in Singapore. Instead of giving the usual replies of being the fans or a bubbly character, they replied that they liked Singaporean Actress Julie Tan. I would take that as them having good taste.
Another one was to places worthy of visiting, and they recommended Hongdae, but not for the music/clubbing scene, but for the street food. Also recommended was Insadong, which they said was a common haunt for tourists.
Slightly unfortunately though, the replies later became more reminiscent of promotional activities, with them encouraging fans to look forward to their 2014 activities, as well as saying the best concept is, as always “the next one”.

They then proceeded on to do a slower number, “Never Let Go”, which helped to showcase their reasonable-to-good singing abilities, as well as their latest “2MYX”, which showed off their dance moves, which were good for a group getting by on a smaller production budget. Sure, it might lack the last bit of sophistication, but they were good fun to watch.
Chancing on a Chance:
A highlight of the program was a chance to win autographed CDs, but not by a lucky draw or shouting the loudest, but by pure luck in a game of scissors-paper-stone, where the audience as a group played against the guys, till the last fan was left standing. And for those who are seeking another giveaway, yours truly fell at the first hurdle.
After the game of chance, we then had a rendition of their senior, SS501’s “Because I Was Stupid”.

The DSP Media Approved Touching Experience:
As an interesting aside to the event, fans were offered a chance to get up-close and personal with the guys, in the form of a high-five/handshake.
My impressions of most of the guys went by in a blur, no doubt helped by security who were keen to move the crowd on. However two guys stood out for me, the lead singer Yun-yeong who responded energetically to me, as well as Seung-yeob who was keen to please and kept doing various variations of a handshake, until I was forced to move on by security by being shoved.
And did I mention that Seung-yeob was really good at working up the crowd, willingly posing for the fans’ cameras?

With that, they did their last song for the night and left the stage. While they might not have been the most unforgettable, or technically perfect Idol group live performance I had seen, I did have enough positive impressions of it to have a good time.
