Hwang Chi Yeul first debuted as a singer in 2007 with two albums, ‘Chi Yeul’ and ‘Five Senses’. He spent his twenties doing part-time jobs, and working as a vocal trainer until late-2014.
He started gaining recognition after appearing on a reality singing program, ‘I Can See Your Voice’ – wowing the audience with his heartfelt rendition of Im Jae Bum’s “Confession”. He described the programme as one that turned his life around; one that showed him a glimmer of hope when he wanted to give up on music.

During the press conference, Chi Yeul shared that the most difficult times of his career was when his “hopes and dreams wavered”, but what pushed him forward was the people he wanted to protect.
He has never thought that it would be possible for him to have concerts in so many different countries, and is extremely thankful for all love he received through programmes like ‘I Am A Singer’.
Chi Yeul mentioned that having to sing as a singer is a given, therefore it is only through different variety shows that he can showcase different sides of him to his fans. He expressed that he is open to all kinds of variety shows like sports, etc, and would be more than happy to try out everything.
So, what are the three things Chi Yeul cannot live without? He answered almost immediately, “Computer – because I have to compose music. Piano. And my fans (laughs).”
Chi Yeul’s 1st Concert in South Korea will be held at Seoul Olympic Hall coming June 24 and June 25 – he said that the concert is a valuable opportunity for him because it has been 10 years since his last album. He also expressed that he is honoured to do this (concert) as a singer, and will do his best to provide unforgettable memories for his fans.
Hwang Chi Yeul’s Mini-Concert in Singapore drew a total of 3,500 fans that came from all around the region. Fans from Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, and even the States flew in specially to watch him live. Was it worth it? Yes, definitely a night to remember.
His fans were treated to renditions of hit songs like Big Bang’s “BANG BANG BANG”, and JYP’s “Honey” – showcasing his slick dancing skills as well. Throughout the two-hour concert, he also tried his best to interact with the audience in mandarin while asking his translator for help from time to time.
The singer’s sense of humour is also one not to be missed. His chirpy personality filled the concert hall, and he infected everyone with his laughter.
In one of the game segments where Chi Yeul had to guess the fruit blindfolded, he started picking up fruits from the plate to eat them. He wiped his hands on the tablecloth, and then on his denim outerwear – putting away the tissue that the translator gave him. When he heard fans exclaiming at his actions, he said in chinese, “It’s alright, I’m from the village.” – causing everyone to burst into laughter.
Chi Yeul commented, “Chinese is difficult, not easy. Korean is also not easy. And English is even more difficult….” Despite saying that he was “a tad bad at english”, he started singing a few english songs that garnered approval from fans.
The concert ended on a high note with a remixed version of Wang Lee Hom’s “Change Me” – we can’t help but feel bitter that the concert had ended.
Hwang Chi Yeul will be making a comeback this month (June) with his brand new mini album, <Be Ordinary>. Make sure to keep a lookout for his honey vocals!
